Abstract

Innovation is widely recognized as an important driver of SME performance; however, existing evidence remains fragmented regarding how different forms of innovation jointly relate to the performance of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), particularly in the Saudi Arabian context. Previous Saudi studies have examined innovation capabilities and specific innovation-related outcomes, but comparatively limited evidence integrates product, process, marketing, and organizational innovation within a common SME performance framework. This study addresses this gap by examining the relationships between these four innovation dimensions and SME performance in Saudi Arabia. Primary data were collected through a structured questionnaire from 282 SMEs operating across different sectors and regions of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was employed to test the hypothesized relationships. The findings indicate that product innovation (β = 0.45, p < 0.001), marketing innovation (β = 0.34, p = 0.007), process innovation (β = 0.28, p < 0.001), and organizational innovation (β = 0.26, p = 0.001) are all positively and significantly associated with SME performance. The results further indicate differences in the magnitude of these estimated relationships across the four innovation dimensions. The study contributes to the literature by providing an integrated empirical assessment of multiple innovation dimensions within the Saudi SME context and by demonstrating that innovation should be examined as a multidimensional phenomenon rather than as a single homogeneous construct. The findings provide evidence relevant to SME managers and policymakers seeking to strengthen innovation capabilities and SME performance within Saudi Arabia’s economic diversification agenda.
