Résumé
Au début du XXe siècle,Virginia Woolf cerne dans son célèbre texte A Room of One’s Own (1929) un certain othering au niveau des sexes : l’obstacle principal auquel doivent faire face les femmes de lettres consiste en le manque d’aménagements qui sont nécessaires pour assurer la possibilité de se vouer à l’écriture créative. Pour cette raison, elle exige que les femmes doivent être en mesure d’acquérir les mêmes conditions matérielles propices à la création littéraire que les hommes.1 Pour illustrer cette thèse, Woolf renvoie à Charlotte Brontë, Mary Anne Evans et Aurore Dupin – trois autrices qui se servaient de pseudonymes masculins, à savoir Currer Bell, George Eliot et George Sand (cf. Woolf 2015 [1929] : 38). Notons qu’une parmi elles a rédigé un roman qui partage les mêmes idéologèmes que celles exposés par Woolf : dans son roman tardif Nanon (1872), George Sand soulève en effet les mêmes questions que Woolf par rapport aux conditions des femmes en mettant en scène des processus spatiaux, monétaires et éducatifs.
